In September 1941 we had dinner one evening with "Chine" Donnelly and his wife in their home in Charleston. We spent a pleasant evening discussing the family of his mother, himself, and his children, He was justly very proud of his children.

I was in my early teens before knowing our name was 'Donnelly' and took to writing it that way as soon as I found this out. The others of my brothers and sisters followed suit with me."

"My father argued 'Donnelly' was too long to write and took to writing it as 'Donley' when he was a boy. As a lad of twelve he wrote 'H. P. Donley' high on the wall of the only school he ever attended, Center Point School, near Given, West Virginia and half.way to Rock Castle, West Virginia. He was in the 'Fifth McGuffey Reader' when he quit school. ----Shirley Donnel1y 8 February 1947."
